This is as true for specialist industrial hardware as it is for consumer products. Whenever you design a new product it should have a full suite of technical documentation. Whether you release it in traditional print form or as a CD-ROM, it should include data sheets, installation guide, release notes and a system administration guide. Underlying all this should be a simple user guide with easy-to-understand work instructions, with links back to the full instruction manual. Design engineers often begin by mapping out a documentation plan, defining the scope, size, required resources and delivery format of the technical documentation they are preparing. We’ve all seen examples of bad instruction manual design – usually, it’s unreadable, and therefore useless (in some cases, even dangerous.) Firstly, the writer should know the product before they begin thinking about a user manual. They should know the abilities and requirements of their target reading audience, and be proficient in the appropriate publishing software or CAD design tools. Good technical documentation design means approaching the project as if you were writing an illustrated book; user manuals that consist entirely of graphics (animated or not) can be hard to read. Many manuals are graphics only – but that’s because the user is expected to use the accompanying CD-Rom or downloadable software. Even so, they can be confusing. Whether the manual is on screen or in printed form, a table of contents (TOC) is a must. This is the first thing the writer will compile – it helps them to focus and arrange their ideas. The right technical documentation can make all the difference between success and failure of a particular . While the best designs are easy to use and their function is clear to experts, it is of utmost importance to make sure that the supporting documentation is easily accessible to those who are not necessarily experts, but may still need to utilise the full functionality of the product. The last thing you want for an end product is for people to underestimate its value.

So, to allow users and potential sellers of your products or components to get the best from them, you need more than great mechanical design or obsolescence. A clear and concise but comprehensive instruction manual is a must. Often great products get let down by poor instruction manual design.
