Harmful chemicals can travel around the globe and cause adverse effects far from where they were produced and used. are well-known for traveling long distances and reaching remote areas. Many of these devices, however, contain components and materials that pose health and environmental risks. We will explore the sources and risks of POPs in electronic devices in this blog post. Electronic devices are made up of circuit boards, casings, cables, batteries, and other components made of this material. Manufacturing and disposal processes may introduce it into the environment. Codes for low waste are based on the chemical makeup of the waste, as well as whether hazardous waste controls or persistent organic pollutants (POPs) apply.

The WEEE can be divided into the following categories:

    • Hazardous waste is waste that contains hazardous chemicals in certain concentrations.
    • POP waste – If the chemicals exceed certain concentrations and are POPs.

A POP is an organic compound that is toxic, persists in the environment, accumulates in food chains, and poses a health and environmental risk. Because of their persistence, these chemicals can be transported far from their sources via air, water, and migratory species. Pollution can occur when POPs are released into water bodies or deposited in soil. Consequently, aquatic life, soil organisms, and ultimately humans are at risk of consuming contaminated water and crops.

Here are some solutions:

    • Eco-design principles can reduce hazardous substances.
    • To reduce and eliminate POPs in electronic devices, manufacturers, policymakers, consumers, and recycling facilities must collaborate.
    • Regulations restricting or banning POPs in electronic devices should be enacted and enforced by the government.
    • By increasing public awareness of POP risks, consumers will demand safer and more sustainable electronic devices.
    • Research and development should focus on developing safer alternatives to POPs commonly found in electronic devices.

The effects/impacts are as follows:

    • POPs negatively impact ecosystems and biodiversity, resulting in population declines and biodiversity losses. Besides affecting human health, it can also cause cancer, developmental disorders, neurological effects, and hormonal disruptions, resulting in thyroid problems, impaired immune function, and metabolic problems.

As a result of their widespread distribution and use, POPs have a significant and widespread impact on human health and the environment. Due to our inability to reduce the production, use, and release of pollutants that harm human health and ecosystems, we must take steps to protect both.

Environmental Compliance and Supply Chain Services won its renewal contract from an IT solutions expert based in US. The Client is a known brand for storage solutions that deliver superior efficiency, performance and scalability. In the last 3 decades of its existence, innovation in technology has been the Client’s success mantra and the Client holds record number of patents in storage solution packages. The Client came on board with ۿ۴ý in the year 2014 after having faced data collection issues. The Client had a team in house that was severely challenged by non-responsive suppliers, incomplete CMRTs, slow process management and poor quality data, these issues proved to be a major hindrance in compliance management for the Client, hence they decided to outsource the responsibility to compliance experts. ۿ۴ý demonstrated its track record of over 2 decades, several successfully completed compliance processes, on time guarantee and superior cost efficiencies; these strategic benefits helped ۿ۴ý to win the project for the first time. ۿ۴ý managed to bring in a turnkey response in compliance management for the Client, they therefore decided to renew the partnership for the next financial year. On the occasion, ۿ۴ý’s Business Head, Environmental Compliance said, “When we won the contract last year, the Client’s data collection rate was only about 55%, with ۿ۴ý compliance management teams’ efforts we have been able to scale up their success rate to 91%. The team’s strong outreach capability has been able to generate such a phenomenal change over a period of mere 3 months. I am extremely proud of our Compliance Management team that has exceeded Client expectations and demonstrated strategic value in engaging with ۿ۴ý’s team of Compliance experts. We look forward to bringing all our Clients significant business benefits. ” For more information about the wide range of services provided by ۿ۴ý, visit . RoHS2Product manufacturers have a huge responsibility of making a renewal request for the that do not contain expiry date, as those exemptions will expire on 21 July 2016 and subsequently fall under the RoHS non-compliant category. Manufacturers who have to use the RoHS2 exempted substances to produce their end product even after the expiration date, hence need to make a renewal request. As the exemptions are moving on an expiration track it is to be noted that the European Commission has already received some renewal requests. The received renewal requests are to modify the description for the below mentioned exemptions:

): “Cadmium and Lead in filter glasses and glasses used for reflectance standards”

Why Optical Device Manufacturers send a renewal request?

Most of the electronic devices use optical and magnetic properties for their functionality along with electrical properties. As per experts in the industry, the requested exemptions for renewal request concern 13(a) & 13(b). Since these exemptions deal with optical systems, devices like laser, optical fibers (which is used for communication and sensing), reflectors and transmitters, optical lenses, surgical and research instruments, manufacturers of these components need to be especially aware of the repercussion of the exemption getting expired.

If the exemption expires some of the specific functions of optical systems could get compromised and EU would then classify the end product as RoHS non-compliant. The following are some of the specific functionalities of optical systems that need manufacturer’s special attention.

  • Color balancing:

The use of Lead and Cadmium in the optical systems affects the wavelength and color correction of the images in different ways. Lead and Cadmium elements are used within the glass matrix in form of lead oxide in optical glass and lead oxides, cadmium oxides, cadmium sulphides and cadmium selenides in filter glass. It is necessary to use a combination of chemical substances to improvise image quality rather that cover a broad spectral range. Suppose the color correction is not performed well, there is a chance to get different color effects from the viewpoint of optics:

  1. Different lateral magnifications will cause to obtain different color effects in the image
  2. Axial differences will cause only one color for a sharp image usually green is made good but the red and green images are blurred and badly resolved
  • Transmission in UV spectral region:

Transmission is strongly reduced in Lead free optical glasses, this ranges from 410 nm to 365 nm and no transmission occurs below 365nm. This functionalities positively impacts the application of electronic transmission devices and hence is a very important attribute.

The EU RoHS directive – a worldwide issue /blog/regulatory-compliance/the-eu-rohs-directive-a-worldwide-issue/ Sun, 06 Mar 2011 11:14:30 +0000 https://enventure.com/engineering-blog/?p=384 Environmental compliance, environmental management, FPGA design, Mechanical engineering, PCB design, RoHS Compliance

The post The EU RoHS directive – a worldwide issue appeared first on ۿ۴ý.

]]>
The RoHS compliance laws apply to all products entering the EU, and thus affect component engineering companies worldwide. The US is a major exporter of electronic products to Europe, and anyone producing components, embedded firmware etc. for this market have to abide by the EU rules.

Although the does not apply to products manufactured for the home market, some US states have launched their own environmental compliance laws in line with EU legislation. But it isn’t just RoHS compliance that component manufacturers have to be aware of. There are other EU rulings which affect us too, such as the ELV, WEEE and REACH directives.

The environmental compliance laws in North America vary enormously between states, as do those in countries outside the EU and USA. In addition, the EU is constantly updating and modifying its RoHS/WEEE directives. This all makes environmental extremely complex for COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) manufacturers.

Rather than customizing, say, a PCB design to fit round individual compliance laws, it makes sense to have just a single bill of materials which fits all criteria worldwide. With an eye to the future, several large manufacturers have developed their own standards, some of which are even stricter than those laid down by the EU. IBM, for example, banned DecaBDE as part of its environmental compliance management program, even though it was RoHS-exempt. Later, however, it became a RoHS target. This was overturned by the European Court in 2008, but at least IBM was covered in the interim.

For all issues concerning BOM management, you can rely upon us at ۿ۴ý Technologies to come up with the right solutions – however draconian the environmental compliance laws become.
