Lincoln, IL (www.lcuredlions.com) - The Red Lions (1-3) would host the IU-East Red Wolves (1-2-1) in their home opener. Playing the second game of a back-to-back would show itself in the second half as the Red Lions held their own for the majority of the game. The Red Lions would fall 4-1, but the final score was not indicative of the match.

Moments That Mattered

First half

Saturday's game got underway and the Red Lions found themselves down in a hurry as the Red Wolves snuck one by in the first seven minutes.
IU East would get another opportunity minutes later to score with a penalty kick, but a beautiful save by Goalkeeper Michael Brand (JR/Mattoon, IL) would keep them off the board.
LCU wouldn't trail for long as Keaton Doty (SO/Frankfort, IL) would play a ball in the air, gave it a one touch past the outstretched arms of the keeper and buried the ball in the back of the net just inside the 18 yard box, to level the score 1-1.
Both defenses would settle in nicely and thus we headed to halftime tied, 1-1.

Second Half

IUE opened the second half of play just like they did in the first, quickly netting their second of the game at the 50' mark, taking the lead, 2-1.
The Red Lions did a much better job of controlling possession on the offensive side of the field and making big plays on the defensive side to keep IUE at bay until the last 6 minutes of the game where the Red Wolves would find the net two more times to make it 4-1.
Rough starts for each half and a late game push by IUE would be the difference for LCU as they came up short at a final score of 4-1.

Player of the Game | Michael Brand

The Junior Goalkeeper gave his team a fighting chance by coming up with several big saves throughout the game. Brand ended with 12 saves for the game on Saturday.

Coach Quote | Craig Hoskins

"I was extremely pleased with the effort today. Guys were tired and banged up coming off a back-to-back, and they responded very well. IU-East had a lot of speed, and our defense really stood up to the test. Offensively, we need to be more creative in attack instead of relying solely on through balls. MJ Brand played an outstanding game in the goal, possibly the best of his career. I'm really proud of his individual effort tonight.

Player Quote | Michael Brand

"I think we worked really hard, we just had a hard time setting up the right passes to get the goals we needed. I thought this was one of our better games so far this season against a tough team. I think we took note of what we need to work on and will do so heading into practice this week."
